Sex Crimes

What is a sex crime?

A sex crime is an illegal sex act, or illegal form of human sexual behavior, as defined by the state and federal government. People who are convicted of sex crimes are called Asex offenders. In the state of Ohio, all sex offenders must list them selves on the Sex Offender Registry. The duration and attendant reporting requirements are tied to an offenders classification. This Registry is accessible to the public, which means that future employers, landlords, educational facilities, and neighbors will be able to obtain this information.

In today’s climate, sex crimes carry a special stigma. A person accused of a sex crime needs an experienced lawyer. Once convicted, a sex offender is marked for life. Conviction of a sex crime is more serious than other kinds of criminal convictions. Long prison terms are normal, even for simple possession of child pornography. Now that Ohio has enacted the Adam Walsh Act, offenders will be classified under a three tier classification system. The defendant’s name, address and photograph can be publicized by the police and posted on the Internet. A person convicted of a sex offense may be limited in the kinds of jobs he can hold and where he can live. Even conviction of a sexual misdemeanor can affect an individual for the rest of his or her life.

If you are investigated or charged with sex assault, date rape, child pornography, or an Internet sex crime, it is essential to hire an experienced attorney to protect your rights. You need a lawyer as early as possible – ideally, before charges are even brought.
